Unless you have friends with a DS, it's an experience like playing any other Mario Party alone (and that's not a bad thing). C+
(Taken from gamespot, under the name darksongbird)
This game isn't bad at all. In fact, at times it's fun. It's not always fun, but if you don't come out expecting it to be more than what it's supposed to be, which is Mario Party that you might be playing alone a lot, then you might be surprised at how good this game is.
I was shocked and happy at how often you actually use the mic. I think I've used it just as much as using the stylus! All of the games the require the mic so far have been fun. There are 5 board games to play in. I've beat 3 of the 5 and am on the 4th.
Levels are as follow:
1 -- +Wiggler's Garden+ -- Boss: Pirahna Plant
2 -- +Toadette's Music Room+ -- Boss: Hammer Bro
3 -- +DK Stone Statue+ -- Boss: Dry Bones
4 -- +Kamek's Library+ -- Boss: Kamek
5 -- +Bowser's Pinball Machine -- Boss: Bowser
Hope that was helpful. Anyway, I'm on board 4, Kamek's Library, and it's interesting, the music is wonderful and the star layout is this: there are 3 pots floating on spaces, and in 1 of the 3 is a star. Thankfully, the stars in the pots are only 10 coins so you should have little trouble getting one open.
Other possibilities are a pot that chomps you out, and sends you back to the beginning stage and another pot that simply requires the standard 10 coins, but gives you 5 in return. Not so bad, considering it eliminates one of the pots and narrows the search down. Overall, I'm quite pleased with the game.
However, it's not without it's faults. Correct me if I'm wrong, but there are Mario Party points that you earn after you complete a successful board game (whether you come out winning or losing) tallying up your coins, stars, turns and so on. It unlocks a lot of things like random items that have NO USE. Are they for decorating or something? Feel free to comment if you know what they're for. But so far I've gotten pointless items for a mindless collection.
Like after I beat the fiend in Toadette's board, The Hammer Bros., I got Toadette's stool. HOW am I going to use that? Even if I could decorate the board with it, wouldn't that be extremely pointless? There are no unlock-able characters or levels and after you beat the 5 levels in the game, I'm sure there's nothing left. There are 8 characters in the game which isn't a bad amount but there could have been more (as well as more boards).
Unlocking Birdo or various other Mario characters would have evened out the score (especially for the bad guys). Birdo would have been cool. And unlocking maybe two more levels would have been perfect.
That's that. I think I touched on every main part I wanted to after finishing DK's Stone Statue and beating the fun Dry Bones battle (which was a little too easy if I must say so). I'm not sure about how you go about beating Kamek and Bowser, but a rather simply-executed but semi-tough RPG battle would have been great too.
But those are minor complaints (the last being a creative one).
Here's how I rate the game:
Characters: B+ (see complaints above)
Graphics: B- (good but doesn't push boundries like Super Mario RPG or Golden Sun probably did upon release)
Sound: C+ (A- for Kamek's Library)
Game-play: B- (Mic games are the best)
Fun: C++
Replay Value: C+ (After I beat this, I see myself at least playing the mini-games again from time to time).
Overall: C+
end note: Remember, I didn't play one game with another live person yet so this may have effected the score a bit.
Price: $74.91
